Co-generation

Co-generation is the production of two kinds of energy — usually electricity and heat — from a single source of fuel. Co-generation can replace the traditional method of supplying energy from multiple sources, e.g., purchasing electricity from the power grid and burning natural gas or oil separately in a furnace to produce heat or steam.

A co-generation system normally consists of a turbine connected to an alternator to produce electricity, and a waste heat recovery system to capture heat from the exhaust. Over 90 percent of the energy in the original fuel is put to productive use. Total energy savings can amount to 35% or more.

Co-generation technology is best suited for large facilities that have a high hot water usage such as hospitals, nursing homes, colleges and universities, hotels, apartment/condominium complexes and government facilities as well as industrial and manufacturing plans that need process steam.

Co-generation solutions provide our clients with the following benefits:

  • Savings in fuel costs
  • Increased power reliability
  • Greenhouse gas footprint reduction
  • Conservation of limited resource of fossil fuels
