Waste to Energy

All landfills generate a by-product known as landfill gas, which is an excellent source of renewable energy. Landfill gas (LFG) can be used either directly by industry or to generate heat and electricity for public consumption.

Ameresco has particular expertise in landfill gas-to-energy (LFGTE) projects. LFGTE transforms the methane gas produced by landfills (biogas) into clean power, and is an increasingly popular energy technology. Biogas is generated 24 hours a day, 365 days a year and is one of the very few renewable fuel resources that can be converted into high-quality, reliable electricity. Our clients benefit politically, environmentally and financially from developing this resource.

There are still a number of landfill sites that will burn the methane gas (organic material rots in an oxygen-free environment, which becomes landfill gas). The solution for destroying methane gas is to collect and burn it off in a flare. Methane is actually a more powerful greenhouse gas than CO² as it absorbs a narrow band of radiation from earth as it is warmed by the sun.

Ameresco has completed waste to energy projects in Utah, Wisconsin, California, South Carolina, Georgia, Delaware and Missouri and most recently signed a new landfill gas project in San Antonio.
